Blackness is a reflection on darkness as a place of encounter rather than a symbol of evil. Even before light appeared in the creation narrative, Genesis describes a world immersed in darkness, where the Spirit of God was already present. This image led me to question the meanings we attach to blackness, both in our language and in our spiritual imagination. As a Black woman, I ask myself how a color so often associated with negativity can also be the color of a people created and loved by God. This project invites us to dwell within this tension, to listen to the questions it raises, and to seek, within darkness itself, another way of perceiving the presence of God.

“In the Beginning..” is a performance built around a public conversation with God. Hidden beneath a blanket in a chapel transformed into darkness, I pray, sing, and question my own existence as a Black woman before God. Rather than attempting to resolve the biblical text, the performance inhabits the questions that emerge from it.
